Petition: No Pipeline to Churchill

What’s at stake:

• A safe climate: Building a pipeline and an LNG export terminal at Churchill would have devastating climate and environmental impacts. Expanding and burning fossil fuels worsens climate impacts like the flooding and fires devastating Manitoba. 
• The health of our communities: Pollution from leaking and flaring fossil gas has devastating impacts on air quality and human health. The construction of a pipeline and export terminal would also disrupt lands, waters, and habitat across Manitoba and Hudson Bay.  
• Affordable energy: An LNG export terminal at Churchill would require huge amounts of energy to operate, which would very likely impact Manitoba rate-payers. More generally, the longer we rely on oil and gas, the more we are affected by volatile prices and fossil fuel-driven inflation. 
• Exporting profit for public risk: We know from other LNG export terminals in Canada, that these projects are usually foreign-owned, exporting profits to the US and beyond while Manitoba communities and taxpayers are left with all the risks. 
• Public subsidies: Other LNG projects in Canada have relied on heavy government subsidies to be viable. The fact that there is no private-sector proponent for a pipeline and terminal at Churchill shows how risky and untenable the project is. We should not have to foot the bill.
• Democracy and consent: The proposal to fast-track this major infrastructure threatens to undermine proper environmental assessment and free, prior, and informed consent with Indigenous rights-holders.
